The Dental Clinic at Al Falah Healthcare Center, part of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), was recently able to restore a 14-year-old’s smile successfully after his whole tooth was knocked out when he got into an accident while riding his scooter.
Thanks to a quick presence of mind, his mother immediately placed the tooth in milk. This action helped prevent the tooth from drying out and acted as a temporary preservative. His mother brought him to Al Falah Healthcare Center the next day, where the family members were informed that the success rate of tooth replantation after 12 hours is nearly 7 %.
The mother was worried about the cosmetic impact of a missing tooth and its effect on a teenager, the family agreed to carry on with the procedure after a thorough dental examination. First, the tooth was cleansed without removing soft tissue, and replanted into the socket. A splint was then placed, stabilizing the weak teeth together. A pre and post-operative X-ray was then taken to determine the procedure’s efficacy. The patient was advised to follow a soft food diet for two weeks and refrain from heavy physical exercise or games to avoid possible trauma or bleeding. Eight days after the first procedure, a root canal was performed followed by removal of splint.

The patient and his mother were very worried about the missing tooth and its’ effect on teenager’s social interactions, but we were able to put their worries to rest and succeeded in restoring his tooth, gain his beautiful smile and confidence back. The patient and his family were delighted with the result, considering the low success rate of such cases.
